Unlike the roots and name of Westphalian pumpernickel, no doubts abound when it comes to what it contains and how it is produced. Aided by Westphalia’s long rye-growing tradition, it is here that this bread speciality developed into a pure, natural and traditional food that is deeply grounded in the region.

For this reason, five producers came together in 2010 to establish ‘Schutzgemeinschaft Westfälischer Pumpernickel e.V.’ (association for the protection of Westphalian pumpernickel).

The association aims to:

  • Protect and maintain geographical indications for baked goods from the Westphalia region (in particular by establishing trademark protection for geographical indications referring to Westphalia) and defend the use of such indications from all kinds of misuse.
  • Uphold and promote the quality of Westphalian baked goods.
  • Promote the sale of products from North Rhine-Westphalia (including beyond the region’s borders), especially baked goods from Westphalia
