(Gelsenkirchen, 2014-11-21) Westfälischer Pumpernickel (Westphalian pumpernickel) is now registered by the EU as a regional speciality. Therefore, it is now officially awarded as ‘protected geographical indication’ (PGI) and can only be baked in Westphalia according to strict quality rules.
‘We are very proud that the EU has finally confirmed the unique character of our Westphalian Pumpernickel just like Parmesan-Cheese or Champagne’ says Thomas Gill, Chairman of the German association for the protection of Westphalian pumpernickel. ‘This regional delicacy is increasingly appreciated by consumers all over the world.’
